Allergic Contact Dermatitis: A Macro and Micro Overview

Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  1. List 2 types of contact dermatitis and summarize the typical clinical settings and physical exam features that are most characteristic of allergic contact dermatitis. (The Macro View)
  2. Explain patch testing and how it is used in the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis.
  3. Describe some groups of chemicals that are the most frequent contact allergens, and discuss a few allergens that cause contact allergy and are increasingly problematic. (The Micro View)

 

Kathryn A. Zug, MD

Dr. Zug is professor of Surgery, Section of Dermatology. She has worked at DHMC since 1996. Since 2010, she has been director of the Dermatology Residency Program. She is a 1988 graduate of the Dartmouth-Brown Program in Medicine, did her internship at Roger Williams Hospital in Providence Rhode Island, and her residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (1989-1992).

 

Dr. Zug has had longstanding regional referral subspecialty clinics in contact & occupational dermatitis and interdisciplinary clinic with hematology/oncology for patients with cutaneous lymphomas. She is a member and secretary-treasurer of the North American Contact Dermatitis Group, a 13 member research collaborative group that analyzes and publishes on trends and associations in contact allergy in North America. She served as president of the American Contact Dermatitis Society, and in 2014 served on the European Contact Dermatitis Society’s 11th (Malmo, Sweden 2012) and 12th Congress (Barcelona, Spain 2014) Scientific Program Committee. She was an invited speaker at both Congress meetings. She is co-author of 3 editions of the text book, “Skin Disease, Diagnosis and treatment”, which has been published in Chinese, Russian, French, Spanish, Greek and Portuguese (>35,000 copies sold). She also co-authored the text Derm Deck DDx, a clinical reference in deck format. She is author or co-author of >50 publications. She enjoys teaching and mentoring residents and medical students, many of whom have collaborated with her on research projects leading to national or international meeting presentations, and publication.   She is mother of 3 children, ages 13, 14 and 16. In her free time you will find her walking or running with her yellow lab, Jingle, and watching her children play sports
