Medical Education and Practice in an Era of Lifestyle Illnesses

The event will provide perspective of our healthcare and food industries during the development of the epidemics of obesity and lifestyles illnesses. Presented will be a distillation of landmark publications that describe the history of the obesity epidemic, past and proposed public health initiatives, and descriptive recommendations for adapting medical education and practice in order to sufficiently address lifestyle illnesses in the generation to come. Obesity and preventable lifestyle diseases have been touted as the “public health crisis of our generation.” This event will provide a comprehensive lens to see the complex network events and policies that produced this epidemic, as well as a framework understanding of how to address lifestyle medicine moving forward.

Jonathan Burgess is a third year medical student at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. This presentation is based on a manuscript accepted for publication in Academic Medicine and is a synthesis of internships at Harvard School of Public Health, a literature review of over 1,000 peer-reviewed publications, and a 20-year passion for diet and lifestyle medicine.
