German Expressionist Fritz Lang, with his fatalistic view of human nature, was perfectly poised to direct this remake of the classic French thriller Le Chien (The Bitch). Chris Cross, a longtime cashier with a gold watch and little else, rescues bad-girl Kitty from her abusive boyfriend. He lets her believe, however, that he is a wealthy artist. As Chris' obsession with the irresistibly vulgar Kitty grows, the meek cashier is seduced, corrupted and transformed into an avenging monster. Introduction by DFS Directorate Member Dennis Damon Moore. D: Fritz Lang, US, 1945, 103m
