Day One: BASICS
June 17, 2014; 8:00 am–5:00 pm
Training For Providers and Counselors Responsible for BASICS 
Interventions
Morning Sessions:
  • Overview of college student drinking, research on best practices, and introduction to the intervention
  • Brief overview of Motivational Interviewing (MI) – considering relevance to a personalized feedback intervention
  • Alcohol information relevant to delivery of BASICS
Afternoon Sessions:
  • Discussion of substances other than alcohol
  • Responding with resistance
  • Implementation issues
 
Day Two: MI
June 18, 2014; 8:00 am–5:00 pm
Deepening and Extending Your MI Skills, Alcohol and Beyond
Morning Sessions:
  • Considering the spirit of Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Thinking reflectively and forming complex reflections
  • Practice using the OARS (Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening & Summaries) toolbox with a variety of behaviors
  • Considering the four foundational processes of MI when talking with students
Afternoon Sessions:
  • Identifying and evoking change talk
  • Strengthening commitment to change and action planning
  • Practice putting it all together!
