Objectives – Participants will be able to:

1. Thoughtfully & constructively critique DHMC’s stated mission of functioning as “a culture of caring”, with an emphasis on the question: “How can we more fully realize this aspiration?”
2. Present the case for “Compassion-centered Medical Care” as a philosophically centering, yet practical philosophy that can help DHMC actualize its core mission
3. Present existing efforts at DHMC supportive of the “Compassion-Centered Medical Care” model, including the new Center for Training in Compassion-Centered Medical Care at The Geisel School of Medicine and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center

Dr. O’Donnell has been a clinician, educator, administrator, and leader at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth for 35 years.  He completed his pre-clinical training at DMS, received his MD degree from Harvard Medical School, trained in Internal Medicine at Dartmouth, and has been on the faculty since 1978.  He joined the Dean’s Office in 1986 and currently is the Senior Advising Dean, Director of Community Programs, and Professor of Medicine and of Psychiatry.  Dr. O’Donnell practices as a medical oncologist and served for many years as Chief of Oncology at the White River Junction VA Hospital.  He has been called “the heart and soul” of the medical school and characterizes himself as “the dean of the informal and hidden curriculum—an important place where values are made.”

Dr. Rodis is a practicing clinical psychologist & Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, who received his PhD in psychology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  For 13 years, Dr. Rodis has served as the leader and facilitator of the Schwartz Center Rounds at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center; these interdisciplinary forums are dedicated to fostering the delivery of compassion-centered patient care.
