Wadjda is a movie of firsts. The first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia tells the story of a young girl living in Riyadh determined to raise money to buy a bike in a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl's virtue. Its director is a Saudi female, astonishing in a country where women cannot drive or vote. And with Wadjda, Saudi Arabia has submitted its first film ever for the Best Foreign Language Oscar. D: Haifaa Al-Mansour, Saudi Arabia/Germany, 2012, subtitled, 97m
