The Triple Threats of Lupus and Pregnancy

Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  1. To identify parameters of pregnancy risk for a woman with SLE
  2. To discuss the data from the largest prospective study on lupus pregnancy and put the results in the context of clinical practice
  3. To manage anti-Ro positive pregnancies with regard to surveillance, preemptive therapy, and treatment of established heart block

 

Dr. Buyon received her medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, NY.  She pursued postgraduate training at the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, New York University Medical Center, and the Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD).  As a postdoctoral fellow at HJD in 1985, Dr. Buyon founded the HJD Lupus Clinic, and has served as its Director to this day.  Dr. Buyon is a fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and is responsible for the annual organization of the Lupus Study Group.

Dr. Buyon is internationally recognized as a researcher and clinician specializing in the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus, neonatal lupus, and rheumatic diseases in pregnancy. She has published more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed science journals and co-authored a book on autoimmune diseases in women written for a lay audience.

Jill P. Buyon, MD has stated that she receives research support from NIH, R03 – “Preventive Approach to Congenital Heart Block with Hydroxychloroquine” (PATCH) and R01 – “Predictors of Pregnancy Outcomes in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Antiphospholipid Syndrome” (PROMISE) and receives royalties from Up to Date, but has no other financial interests or arrangements with any other commercial entities in association with this presentation.  She may discuss Unlabeled/Off-label use of an FDA approved product such as Hydroxychloroquine.
