Supreme Court Update: With A Close Look at the Second Amendment
In this lecture we will discuss the major supreme court decisions of the past year and how they will affect us and future generations.
When we meet on October 26th the Supreme Court will be well into its new term.
As in past years, thorny and provocative questions will be considered by the Roberts Court. The decisions resulting from this session promise to be no less controversial than those decided in the recent past; they will affect all of our lives, and those of our children and grandchildren. David will make clear to us the major decisions of the past year and then look ahead to the looming controversies. Particular attention will be paid to the 2nd Amendment, the details, history and nuances of whether, and to what extent, we all have the right to own a gun. Are “Jim Crow” laws which restrict voting a relic of the past...or are these insidious statutes of animus alive and well? And then there is the issue of “God in the courtroom”. To what extent must our government separate itself from religion? Based on what he learns at this year’s annual Supreme Court Preview Symposium, David will share with us the insider’s thoughts on what might be expected this year. Discussion will be encouraged, and is expected to be relevant and lively.
David Bisno, a retired ophthalmologist with degrees from Harvard, Dartmouth and the Washington University School of Medicine, has been an enthusiastic discussion leader for 20 years within institutes for lifelong learning across our country and overseas. He has presented 27 different courses for ILEAD. Having studied constitutional law at the Harvard Law School with Laurence Tribe, David is fortunate to be able to attend the annual Supreme Court Preview Symposium held each autumn in Williamsburg at the Law School of the College of William and Mary. It is these deliberations and discussions between Supreme Court litigators, journalists and professors held each year just prior to the Court’s October term that David will interpret and report to us.
