Dr. Kim is Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.  He is also a consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic and in the Division of Healthcare Policy and Research.  He serves as the Director of Post-Doctoral Programs at the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CCaTS) at the Mayo Clinic.

As a board-certified Gastroenterologist with added qualification in Transplant Hepatology, his clinical expertise is in liver disease with an emphasis on end stage liver disease, liver transplantation, and viral hepatitis.  He has active research programs supported by US federal grants and contracts.  His projects address (1) prevention and treatment of renal insufficiency before and after liver transplantation, (2) US national policy on liver transplantation, and (3) outcome and treatment of hepatitis B.  His research program is credited for the development of the MELD (model for end stage liver disease), which has been adopted in the US and elsewhere in the world as a standard by which donated livers are allocated.

Extramurally, Dr. Kim has played an active role at the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease.  He serves on the Governing Board as the Treasurer of the organization.  He has chaired several committees and served as an Associate Editor of "Hepatology".
