Philadelphia artist and printmaker, Daniel Heyman '85, serves as the fall Artist-in-Residence at Dartmouth. He will discuss his work during a public talk on Tuesday, September 24 at 4:30 p.m. at the Hood Auditorium. A reception will follow in the Jaffe-Friede Gallery in the Hopkins Center, which is where his exhibition, Attention, is on view through November 24.

In Attention, Daniel Heyman presents 5 monumental print projects, as well as sketches and studies that lead to their creation.

From 2004 to 2010, he concentrated his art on the war in Iraq, specifically the abuse and torture of innocent Iraqis at Abu Ghraib and other prisons. He met with over 45 former detainees, and painted or drew their portraits, and then painted their own accounts of what happened to them at the hands of their American captors. Heyman summarizes many of the ideas from these works in a monumental etching printed on plywood, entitled When Photographers are Blinded, Eagles’ Wings are Clipped, 2009-2010, which is one of the works on display in the exhibition, Attention.

Daniel Heyman lives in Philadelphia and teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design and Princeton University. He received an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College. His work has been exhibited in major institutions including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the New York Public Library. His work is in the collections of numerous institutions, including the Hood Museum of Art and Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College, and Yale University Art Gallery.
