Objectives – Participants will be able to:

1. Recognize the syndrome of recurrent C. Difficile infection
2. Understand the current practice and regulation of fecal transplantation
3. Describe changes in microbiota composition and function following fecal transplantation

Dr. Alexander Khoruts is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Minnesota.  He trained in gastroenterology and immunology at the University of Minnesota, and is a faculty member in the Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology (MICaB) Graduate program there.  He focused his initial research career on basic immunology, and specifically areas of regulatory T cells biology and peripheral T cell homeostasis.  However, in the recent years he radically changed the research direction toward the role of gut microbiota in health and disease.  In 2009 he started the fecal microbiota transplantation program at the University, forming a multidisciplinary team that continues to grow to include expertise in microbial ecology, metabolomics, computer science, pharmacology, and clinical medicine.  The group has several active areas of research directions including standardization of fecal microbiota transplantation and understanding mechanisms behind its therapeutic effects.
