Making Food Good, Clean, & Fair
Josh Viertel is the former president of Slow Food USA, the US branch of the global Slow Food movement. In that position, Viertel was vocal in arguing that the local and sustainable food movement in the US and globally must do more to address questions of social justice, race and class. Before his work at Slow Food, Josh was a founding director of the Yale Sustainable Food Project, which broke new ground bringing local sustainable food to Yale's dining services, built an organic farm on campus, and developed curricula for undergraduates related to food and farming. Before his work at Yale, Josh was a farmer, and also earned an AB in Philosophy and Literature from Harvard University. Josh has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, and listed as one of the seven most powerful voices in the food movement by Forbes and Michael Pollan.
The talk is organized by the Department of Philosophy and co-sponsored with the Ethics Institute, the Sustainability Project, and additional financial support from the Dean of the Faculty office.
