The Dartmouth Political Union is pleased to welcome psychiatrist Jack Turban, neurobiologist Gina Rippon, and philosopher Alex Byrne for an expert panel on sex and gender. Panelists will discuss various aspects of the issue, including mental health, athletics, transgender health care, and the definitions and implications of sex and gender in society.

Panelist Biographies:

Dr. Jack Turban is the Director of the Gender Psychiatry Program and Assistant Professor of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco. His research focuses on the mental health of transgender and gender diverse youth and has been cited in several court cases involving LGBTQ+ rights.

Dr. Gina Rippon is Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Neuroimaging at Aston University. Her research explores the use of neuroscience techniques to investigate social processes, especially those associated with sex/gender. She is an outspoken critic of the populist use of neuroscience research to misrepresent our understanding of sex/gender differences. 

Dr. Alex Byrne is a Professor of Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Byrne’s research explores the philosophical issues relating to sex and gender. His most recent book, Trouble with Gender: Sex Facts, Gender Fictions, was released in January 2024.

Moderator Biography:

Jessica Chiriboga '24 is President Emeritus of the nonpartisan Dartmouth Political Union and will moderate "War on Gender: An Expert Panel on Sex and Gender." She is studying History and Government at Dartmouth and will pursue an MPhil in History at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar in the fall.
