In the opening scene of this lush, mind-bending anime blockbuster, the fiery arc of a comet burns through the heavens and over a secluded stretch of countryside. The night the stars fell, two lives were changed forever.

High schoolers Mitsuha and Taki are complete strangers living separate lives, but one night, they suddenly switch places. Mitsuha wakes up in Taki’s body, and he in hers. This bizarre occurrence continues to happen randomly, and the two must adjust to the complications—and comedy—of living with each other. But when a dazzling comet lights up the night’s sky, it dawns on them: they need to meet. As they begin tugging on the string of fate, they find distance isn’t the only thing keeping them apart. D: Makoto Shinkai, Japan, subtitled, 2017, 1h 46m
