Dr. Lewis received his BA and MA from Trinity College Cambridge, England in medical sciences and biochemistry. He received his clinical training in Medicine at the University of Wales College of Medicine, graduating Bachelor of Medicine /Bachelor of Surgery (MB.BCh) in 1977.  He completed his residency training at the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff and became a Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology at Guy’s Hospital, London from 1982-1989. He gained his Doctorate in Medicine (MD) from the University of Wales in 1988, and from 1989-91 he was a Fellow in Clinical Pharmacology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Lewis was appointed as Assistant Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology &Toxicology at Dartmouth Medical School in 1993 and was promoted to full Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology & Toxicology in 2003. He co-directs the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Molecular Therapeutics Program and the NCC Phase-I group, is Director of the Clinical Pharmacology Shared Resource and Medical Director of the Dartmouth Clinical Trials Office. 

He was the first American Editor for the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (BJCP) from Jan 2005- Dec 2013, and is a BJCP International Editor and Reviews Board Member. He has also served on the Editorial Board of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Cancer Chemotherapy Pharmacology and Human & Experimental Toxicology, and is the current Executive Director of the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology.  

Dr. Lewis is the vice chair of the Pharmacogenetics and Population Pharmacology committee of the Alliance of Clinical Trials in Oncology, an NCI intergroup. He has served on, and chaired, several DOD and NIH study section panels. He has more than 150 peer reviewed manuscripts on Clinical Pharmacology topics and has edited/co-authored several textbooks in the field. His research is funded by NCI, NCATs and several major Pharmaceutical Companies.

His main area of interest in clinical pharmacology is the clinical pharmacology (PK-PD) of anticancer drugs and their human metabolism. Dr. Lewis has extensive experience in first-in-man studies of new drugs and proof of principle studies with a particular focus on the Phase-I investigation of novel anti-cancer agents.
