2. Discuss the role of multi-institutional databases based on EMR queries and their utility in quality and safety, using sepsis as an example.

3. Formulate the tension between recommended protocols, science and CMS reimbursement in patients with sepsis.

Andreas H. Taenzer is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, Pediatrics and The Dartmouth Institute at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He is also the Director of Dartmouth Predictive Analytics, the Pediatric Pain Service and the Pain Free Sedation Center.  Dr. Taenzer has a long standing research interest in patient safety, including patient surveillance via continuous monitoring; predicting adverse events; and working with databases on safety and utilization questions.  Dr. Taenzer is the Vice Chair and Clinical Lead of the High Value Health Care (HVHC) Dissemination of Evidence Based Practice project.  HVHC is a collaboration of 19 healthcare organizations, touching the lives of 80 million Americans.  This effort has measured and reduced variation in delivery of the recommended evidence-based interventions for sepsis. Dr. Taenzer has lead the efforts in sepsis care at his own institution, improving compliance with recommended care dramatically, thereby reducing mortality and reducing cost.  Dr. Taenzer serves as a reviewer for multiple publications, including the Journal of the Joint Commission, British Medical Journal and the New England Journal of Medicine.  He has received funding from the FDA, NIH, CMMI, Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.
