Objectives – Participants will be able to:

1. Identify the current care quality for COPD

2. Recognize system and provider barriers to effective COPD care

3. Discuss how specialty care might be able support care quality in primary care settings.

Dr. Au is the Director of the Health Services Research and Development Center of Innovation for Veteran-Centered and Value-Driven Care at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, and a Professor of Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Washington. His research focuses primarily on the quality and delivery of care for patients with chronic lung diseases, in particular, for patients with COPD and lung cancer.  His research program encompasses a number of areas that utilize clinical research methodology, including clinical trials design, comparative effectiveness research, implementation sciences, health services research and clinical epidemiology in order to inform clinical practice and improve health outcomes for patients. He is interested in patient health behaviors and the effects of health behaviors on outcomes. One of his primary research focuses is on identifying and intervening upon potential gaps in the quality of care for patients with lung cancer and COPD using population management approaches to care.

Dr. Au reported potential conflicts of interest with Novartis. These conflicts have been resolved by validating the activity content through independent peer review by Kelly Kieffer, MD.
