James Bartholomew

James Bartholomew is an influential British author and journalist. His 2004 book, The Welfare State We’re In, on the damaging effects of the British welfare state has been reprinted and become part of the standard sociology course in the U.K. It was praised by Milton Friedman and received several awards.  It was also read and praised by the key politicians who have made radical changes to the operation of welfare benefits in Britain. He was closely involved with the battle for hearts and minds in Britain’s recent referendum on membership of the European Union. He writes regularly for the Daily Telegraph and the Spectator and in one of his articles for the Spectator, he coined the phrase “virtue signalling” which has since been used across the English-speaking world. His latest book, The Welfare of Nations, has been published by the Cato Institute in Washington.
