Lecture Description:
This symposium will consider the crucial linkages between the financial system and the broader economy. A well-functioning financial system can play a significant role in fostering broad-based growth and prosperity, while adverse financial developments can have catastrophic effects on economic activity and employment. Indeed, the financial crisis of 2007-08 caused a severe recession in which millions of Americans lost their jobs and homes, and the subsequent recovery from that crisis has been painfully slow. The panelists in this symposium will characterize key elements of these linkages and discuss recent and prospective changes in the supervision and regulation of the financial system to help mitigate systemic risks and promote sustainable and equitable economic growth.
