The Dartmouth Medical Arts Program mission is to provide an opportunity for medical students, interns, and residents to engage in the arts community with a focus on how artistic endeavors can enhance their ability to provide competent and compassionate care.
The Dartmouth Medical Arts Program (DMAP) brings Rivers Rutherford to Dartmouth College as the first performer in the DMAP artist series. During his performance and workshop, Rivers will perform his music, describe the craft of songwriting, and explain how he incorporates his personal experiences in his songs, creating his theme through the blending of music, melody, and lyric.

Rivers Rutherford is a soulful storyteller and one of Nashville Tennessee’s most talented and accomplished singer-songwriters. Rutherford grew up in the shadow of Elvis’ Graceland homestead of Memphis, and came of out the gates swinging, landing his first cut with American legends Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson: the Highwaymen. What followed were eight #1 hits, multiple Grammy, Country Music Award (CMA) and Academy of Country Music (AMC) nominations, and 19 ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) awards, including both of the coveted ASCAP Country Song and Songwriter of the Year awards, all of which have firmly established Rutherford’s position within the upper echelons of Nashville’s most lauded songwriters. Rutherford’s name is on #1 songs by Tim McGraw, Montgomery Gentry, Gretchen Wilson, Kenny Chesney, Rodney Atkins, and Trace Adkins. Rutherford penned the stunning and Grammy nominated duet “When I Get Where I’m Going” by Brad Paisley, and Dolly Parton. Rutherford wrote Brooks and Dunn’s most successful single to date “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You” which was Number One for six weeks and winner of both the 2002 Billboard and 2002 ASCAP Song of the Year awards.
