Defined as the imitation or representation of the natural world, sound mimesis has not typically played a large role in the shaping of Western classical music. Through varying idioms, styles, and techniques, however, the compositions performed during this recital demonstrate the relationship between sound mimesis and narrative representation in the context of the Western chamber music tradition. These compositions aim to utilize the narrative qualities of sound mimesis to “show,” rather than “tell,” the development of the music and to illustrate the inherent plot that the music contains.
