The Cultural Poetics of Spanish Euroskepticism

Because Euroskepticism is often associated exclusively with the discourse of organized political actors, its literary and artistic expressions have gone largely unnoticed. These works offer nuanced and engaging views on the affects a unified Europe generates, yet their complex contributions escape academic approaches that prioritize other types of data. With Spain being an exemplar of peripheral Europe since the category appeared, the contribution of Spanish writers and artists who have questioned conceptions of Europe acquire new relevance under the current EU crisis. An analysis of their work probes Euroskeptical ideas above and beyond immediate political-economic criticism.
