Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  1. Review the epidemiology of obesity in the U.S. and delineate its major complications
  2. Describe 3 main approaches for losing weight
  3. Discuss key results from longer-term medical and surgical weight loss studies

 

Dr. Clark is a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at The Johns Hopkins University and Interim Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine.  She is a general internist with an ongoing primary care practice and a NIH-funded researcher, with expertise in obesity, diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and clinical trials.  She serves as PI at Hopkins of the ongoing Look AHEAD trial of weight loss in adults with type 2 diabetes, and of a trial comparing bariatric surgery to medical weight loss on diabetes outcomes.   She was Co-PI of the recently completed POWER trial, and serves as the medical safety officer of the NASH Clinical Research Network.

Dr. Clark received her MD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, where she also served as Chief Resident.  She completed a research fellowship in General Internal Medicine at Hopkins where she received her MPH, and then joined the Hopkins faculty in 2000.
