At age nine, Tashi managed to escape from his native region of Shangri-La in Tibet on a horse caravan. He and his family reaching their Indian sanctuary two years later when he turned eleven, only to be caught in the crossfire of the Sino-Indian war of 1962. His grandfather, who fled China to India in 1949 from Mao Tse-Tung's persecution, was now accused of spying for China. The intensely intimate family saga, told in a book Tashi is writing - A Bridge to Shangri-La portrays the resilience of three generations of Tibetans reclaiming their family name through forgiveness and reconcilliation.
