This workshop will be held in two sessions: May 6 & 13 from 6:30 - 9pm. Attendance at both sessions is required. The Letterpress workshop requires a mandatory introductory orientation session for all newcomers to learn the basics of typesetting and press work. The session will begin with a brief discussion of the history and process of Letterpress Printing. After a tour of the workshop participants will set a short poem or paragraph in type that will be printed on a Vandercook press. Emphasis will be placed on the proper techniques of setting hand type, press work, and the selection of appropriate type faces. We will also look at the various styles of type in the shop with a discussion of basic typographical design. No previous experience is required and all materials, tools, and equipment are provided. Be sure to bring either a short poem of no more than 10 to 14 lines, or a quotation of the equivalent number of lines. Instructor: Robert Metzler Class meets in Baker Rm. 25
